please, record my worst

It would seem to me that children are best at recording and REPEATING the worst of you. Why it can't be the good things you say and teach them is beyond me.
As many of you may know, on Christmas Eve (rather technically it was Christmas morning - 1:30 am to be precise) we got stuck in a snow drift. This could be passed of as bad luck, but I feel compelled to point out that the reason we got stuck in said snow drift is because my dear hubby thinks nothing will ever go wrong for him -but it always seems to catch up with him. So, yes, we were running wrecklessly through snow drifts, and they got the better of us. I was angry ( it was definately an "I told you so momement") and apparently I voiced it, despite my desperate attempts to not say "I told you so", I must have expressed myself clearly in any case:

We were shopping around Gander Mountain (a sports store) and we got E and M in one of those carts that has a car attached on the front so they could entertain themselves while we shopped - and yes I am aware they are the filthiest things around, yet they had a lot of fun and are still alive. At one point we were stopped and J was talking to an associate and I picked up on what M was saying:
M (with hand up to ear as if holding a phone): HI, um, Jarod? We are stuck in a snow drift and I was wondering if you could come and get us....we are stuck, so we will wait here...

It continues in similar fashion for awhile, every once in a while she would get out and kick he tires "trying to get them unstuck from the snow drift". Then I hear her yelling at E:

M: EeethAN! Don't. I can't believe it. Grrr. NOOOO. (mumble mumble grumpily) This is YOUR fault....etc.
Me: M! That is not nice. You need to talk nicely to your brother, or you can get out.
M: NO. Mom, we are just playing. We are stuck in a snow drift and I am angry because E did it.

Well, now I guess I know how I sound. Poor E :)

Clearance Puppy

This has been a really crazy weekend. Thursday J got a call from a breeder he had been speaking to 3 or 4 months ago. We were going to go look at a puppy of his (with no real intention of buying) back then, but when we called the breeder said he just sold the last female 2 hours previously. Then on thursday he called to tell J that a buyer backed out last minute and J has first chance at getting her, so Friday we went to see her. She was discounted for us (and b/c she is older now, I think) and much more affordable - and so we brought her home, and her name is Sugar. Sug (shoog) for short. She is very sweet and calm, and listens really well. She is a yellow lab, and for all of you who have read the book or watched the movie - yes, we bought the "clearance puppy"! And actually we stopped at Blockbuster to return some movies and a big Marley & Me poster was in the window and M said :"Is that a picture of Sugar?" - I hope not! Saturday was the last 50 cen...

Stranger Danger

Ok. So, we've talked to M about strangers a bit, telling her to be safe and what not. A couple of times she brings it up when we say no she can't do something and she says "because there are stangers?" or some such. We haven't talked about it recently, but apparently the message stuck: We were at Wal-Mart, had just finised checking out and J went to use the restroom and M wanted to get a drink from the water fountain -I was still a few steps behind, so M said "Mom will you come a little bit closer?" and I said yes, and she continued "because you wouldn't want a stranger to grab me." I smiled and said "No I wouldn't like that." And she said "You would say 'oh no! someone has taken my child!" At which point I couldn't help but laugh and tell her how much I loved her.

Chicken Adventure Begins

Our first step towards the 'homestead' lifestyle: CHICKENS.  J and I have been researching, reading books & articles, and saving a TON of info to our Pinterest board.  I know we are in for some surprises and troubles, but we are doing our best to head them off and avoid other peoples mistakes. (J is still trying to convince me that we need to start pigs this year.  I keep reminding him that is one of the PRIMARY mistakes other homesteaders have made: being too eager and getting in too deep, too fast). So, we start our garden and chickens this year - keeping our fingers crossed that we aren't putting them in poor locations.  The chickens are the first thing branching out into our additional 2 acres.  The coop and kennel are going at the outside, back corner of our fenced in yard.  Our coop is valiantly being made from old cabinets we picked up at the local Habitat for Humanity, Re-Store.  We intend to paint, add roof, prop up on legs, and insert s...
