Coming Full Circle - Idaho

Life has run us around a bit, and we have enjoyed the journey.  As Facebook rather took over our lives in regards to blogging, I did not maintain my blog.  I find, however, that I enjoy coming back and reading my blog more than I like perusing old facebook posts.  So I begin again with blogging; for myself more than anything.

We have managed, since my last post in 2012, to return home to Idaho.

We spent 5 great years in Colorado!  The kids grew up with the neighbors; McKenzie had horse riding lessons from a young lady named Carrie, in Longmont; she started playing flute in 2nd grade, and in 4th she switched to playing trumpet; Ethan started playing soccer, and Minecraft (video gamer in the making).  We got McKenzie a cat named Diamonds. We got a puppy who we named Ryder.  We got new appliances in the kitchen that I love (double oven, fridge with freezer drawer, etc)!  I mention them, because I am sad to have left them in Colorado.  We made great friends with our neighbors:  Parkos (Lisa, Tom and their daugher Kaitlynn); Fergusons (Brianna, Scott, and their kids Zack, Abby and Tenley); Houchins (Kariann, Jeremy, and their kids Hannah, Micah, and crew); along with many kids around the blocks : Zoey, Rose, David, Owen, Evelynn, and the rest!  Colorado had amazing weather, beautiful mountains, and great places to 'get out' and do things. I will miss eating at places down on Pearl Street, like Rueben's with their pretzel burgers.   I worked for a Solar Glass Windows & Doors after Preferred Paper, and loved my part time schedule that allowed me to be home with kids when they weren't in school.  I will miss Lisa, Rick, Gwenael and everyone there. Unfortunately, all the wonderful things of Colorado were diminished by the growing population, and overcrowding the outdoors where we like to get away from PEOPLE.  In addition, we had no 'growing our dream' potential because housing and land is exorbitantly priced.  And lastly, J's work was bought by a large corporation, losing that small company benefit, and hours decreased dramatically toward the end of our time there.

We chose to return to Idaho, where we could begin working on our dream of having a few acres of land, getting some farm animals, and being in the country-side.  We know we love Idaho, and J's entire family that comes with it.  This places us less conveniently located in regards to my family, which is disappointing.  We have many trade-offs, and hope that the benefits out-weigh the disadvantages.

So we continue our life journey in Idaho.  We pray that it is the best decision for our family, and make the best of what we have.

Chicken Adventure Begins

Our first step towards the 'homestead' lifestyle: CHICKENS.  J and I have been researching, reading books & articles, and saving a TON of info to our Pinterest board.  I know we are in for some surprises and troubles, but we are doing our best to head them off and avoid other peoples mistakes. (J is still trying to convince me that we need to start pigs this year.  I keep reminding him that is one of the PRIMARY mistakes other homesteaders have made: being too eager and getting in too deep, too fast). So, we start our garden and chickens this year - keeping our fingers crossed that we aren't putting them in poor locations.  The chickens are the first thing branching out into our additional 2 acres.  The coop and kennel are going at the outside, back corner of our fenced in yard.  Our coop is valiantly being made from old cabinets we picked up at the local Habitat for Humanity, Re-Store.  We intend to paint, add roof, prop up on legs, and insert s...

Caught Bare Bottomed.

Yesterday I went to retrieve my kids from playing in the backyard with the neighbors....When I round the corner I behold my 5 year old daughter with her shorts baring her bottom to the 6 year old neighbor boy. Me:  M!  E!  It is time to go home. now! M:  E did it too! (while sheepishly pulling her shorts back up and E snaps his head around to look at me with big eyes and "O" mouth) WHY?

Clearance Puppy

This has been a really crazy weekend. Thursday J got a call from a breeder he had been speaking to 3 or 4 months ago. We were going to go look at a puppy of his (with no real intention of buying) back then, but when we called the breeder said he just sold the last female 2 hours previously. Then on thursday he called to tell J that a buyer backed out last minute and J has first chance at getting her, so Friday we went to see her. She was discounted for us (and b/c she is older now, I think) and much more affordable - and so we brought her home, and her name is Sugar. Sug (shoog) for short. She is very sweet and calm, and listens really well. She is a yellow lab, and for all of you who have read the book or watched the movie - yes, we bought the "clearance puppy"! And actually we stopped at Blockbuster to return some movies and a big Marley & Me poster was in the window and M said :"Is that a picture of Sugar?" - I hope not! Saturday was the last 50 cen...
