Bug box or potty cup??

Saturday was Charlotte's 2nd birthday party (and yes, Ethan's due date, but no, no ethan yet.). J, Justi, myself, and M had to go to Target before we went to the party to pick up Charlotte's present (yes, I always put stuff off until the last day...) and we picked out some moon sand b/c I figured charlotte would have a blast with it...maybe not so much Jess...anyway, while we were at Target Justi bought M a new bug set (has net, couple of plastic bugs and a cup with a magnifying glass to see bugs in). She did so because her dog ate M's last bug net, and apparently felt guilty.

While we were driving to the lunch, Justi gave M the toy, still wrapped and M started asking what the stuff was:

M: what's that? (pointing to the net)
me: That's a net for catching bugs!
M: Oh! what's that? (pointing to the bugs)
me: Those are bugs.
M: Oh! (excited giggles) and a cup! momma, I potty in the cup!
me: (stunned for half a second) oh, no baby! babies don't potty in cups.
M: oh. Just momma's? for the doctor?
me: yes, that's right. Just for the doctor.

so? I've been taking her to the doctors appointments with me, and each time I have to pee in a cup, and M knows now that sometimes I have to pee in a cup. why not her too??

Clearance Puppy

This has been a really crazy weekend. Thursday J got a call from a breeder he had been speaking to 3 or 4 months ago. We were going to go look at a puppy of his (with no real intention of buying) back then, but when we called the breeder said he just sold the last female 2 hours previously. Then on thursday he called to tell J that a buyer backed out last minute and J has first chance at getting her, so Friday we went to see her. She was discounted for us (and b/c she is older now, I think) and much more affordable - and so we brought her home, and her name is Sugar. Sug (shoog) for short. She is very sweet and calm, and listens really well. She is a yellow lab, and for all of you who have read the book or watched the movie - yes, we bought the "clearance puppy"! And actually we stopped at Blockbuster to return some movies and a big Marley & Me poster was in the window and M said :"Is that a picture of Sugar?" - I hope not! Saturday was the last 50 cen...

Stranger Danger

Ok. So, we've talked to M about strangers a bit, telling her to be safe and what not. A couple of times she brings it up when we say no she can't do something and she says "because there are stangers?" or some such. We haven't talked about it recently, but apparently the message stuck: We were at Wal-Mart, had just finised checking out and J went to use the restroom and M wanted to get a drink from the water fountain -I was still a few steps behind, so M said "Mom will you come a little bit closer?" and I said yes, and she continued "because you wouldn't want a stranger to grab me." I smiled and said "No I wouldn't like that." And she said "You would say 'oh no! someone has taken my child!" At which point I couldn't help but laugh and tell her how much I loved her.

Chicken Adventure Begins

Our first step towards the 'homestead' lifestyle: CHICKENS.  J and I have been researching, reading books & articles, and saving a TON of info to our Pinterest board.  I know we are in for some surprises and troubles, but we are doing our best to head them off and avoid other peoples mistakes. (J is still trying to convince me that we need to start pigs this year.  I keep reminding him that is one of the PRIMARY mistakes other homesteaders have made: being too eager and getting in too deep, too fast). So, we start our garden and chickens this year - keeping our fingers crossed that we aren't putting them in poor locations.  The chickens are the first thing branching out into our additional 2 acres.  The coop and kennel are going at the outside, back corner of our fenced in yard.  Our coop is valiantly being made from old cabinets we picked up at the local Habitat for Humanity, Re-Store.  We intend to paint, add roof, prop up on legs, and insert s...
