What a Day.

Last night there was a heck of a thunderstorm, booming and crackling away, which of course causes my dog to freak out. So I put her in a kennel (this one is smaller than her usual one because for one I thought she may feel safer in a more confined space, and for two I figured she couldn't tear it apart like the other one because it gave her less space to move.) and she was actually a little bit better in this kennel. well, at about 3:00 a.m. I Got up to tell her to be quiet, then at 5:30 a.m. I heard a huge crack of thunder that startled J and I awake but Prints was quiet. Suspicious, I went to check on her, and she seemed fine other than that she completely demolished her blanket and reaked of urine (she was so scared she peed.) Then in the morning at about 8:30 Justi and I went to go to the gym, but low and behold I had forgotten to roll up the windows in the view. The seats were soaked, and I mean SOAKED. So we took Justi's car and put a towel on M's car seat. After working out we went home for about 1hour, at which time I found messages on my phone from my grandma informing me that I forgot to pick her and grandpa up to go to the airport. I felt awful!! (although, gram never told me what day or time to pick her up, we talked about everything else, but not that.) Then M and I went to town to get some lunch before going to Cousin Jessica's house to babysit and go swimming. As I was driving I went to roll down the car window and shoo out a bee, when THUMP! CRASH!! SCREECH!!! clunk clunk clunk clunk clunk. And I coasted my broken vehicle to the side of the road. M screeched, then said "Oh man. Crash." Yes, M, Yes. Crash.
Everyone is okay, except the median post in the middle of the road, and our Saturn Vue which is now missing a part of the front side, a crack down the remaining front side, and a crunched head light, and something is all screwed up on the undercarriage. and the two driver side tires are flat. yay. We stepped out of the car and oil, or whatever guck it was, was oozing quickly down th pavement, and M informed me: "Dirty. Oh Man. Mess, mom." yes, M, yes. Mom made a mess.
After that whole debacle we had the car towed to Jessica's house, which was close fortunately, and babysat with Josh til Jess was home from her doctors appointement and then we got all the girls in their swimsuits and trucked down to the pool...which , low and behold, was closed for repairs. I don't even want to think about what the rest of the day has in store for me. WISH ME LUCK.

Clearance Puppy

This has been a really crazy weekend. Thursday J got a call from a breeder he had been speaking to 3 or 4 months ago. We were going to go look at a puppy of his (with no real intention of buying) back then, but when we called the breeder said he just sold the last female 2 hours previously. Then on thursday he called to tell J that a buyer backed out last minute and J has first chance at getting her, so Friday we went to see her. She was discounted for us (and b/c she is older now, I think) and much more affordable - and so we brought her home, and her name is Sugar. Sug (shoog) for short. She is very sweet and calm, and listens really well. She is a yellow lab, and for all of you who have read the book or watched the movie - yes, we bought the "clearance puppy"! And actually we stopped at Blockbuster to return some movies and a big Marley & Me poster was in the window and M said :"Is that a picture of Sugar?" - I hope not! Saturday was the last 50 cen...

Stranger Danger

Ok. So, we've talked to M about strangers a bit, telling her to be safe and what not. A couple of times she brings it up when we say no she can't do something and she says "because there are stangers?" or some such. We haven't talked about it recently, but apparently the message stuck: We were at Wal-Mart, had just finised checking out and J went to use the restroom and M wanted to get a drink from the water fountain -I was still a few steps behind, so M said "Mom will you come a little bit closer?" and I said yes, and she continued "because you wouldn't want a stranger to grab me." I smiled and said "No I wouldn't like that." And she said "You would say 'oh no! someone has taken my child!" At which point I couldn't help but laugh and tell her how much I loved her.

Chicken Adventure Begins

Our first step towards the 'homestead' lifestyle: CHICKENS.  J and I have been researching, reading books & articles, and saving a TON of info to our Pinterest board.  I know we are in for some surprises and troubles, but we are doing our best to head them off and avoid other peoples mistakes. (J is still trying to convince me that we need to start pigs this year.  I keep reminding him that is one of the PRIMARY mistakes other homesteaders have made: being too eager and getting in too deep, too fast). So, we start our garden and chickens this year - keeping our fingers crossed that we aren't putting them in poor locations.  The chickens are the first thing branching out into our additional 2 acres.  The coop and kennel are going at the outside, back corner of our fenced in yard.  Our coop is valiantly being made from old cabinets we picked up at the local Habitat for Humanity, Re-Store.  We intend to paint, add roof, prop up on legs, and insert s...
